Indonesia: NII PROTECTED BY POLICIANS SINCE NEW ORDER: HISTORIAN

THE JAKARTA POST – 30 april 2011

A historian who has published works about the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) movement says the radical group has so far survived prosecution because it has been protected by political figures since the days of the New Order regime under Soeharto.Speaking in a discussion on the NII in Jakarta on Saturday, Sholahudin said this political protection was still in place today, as indicated by the movement's participation in general elections.

“The NII has this mysterious relationship with politicians and rulers,” Sholahudin said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

He said Islamic boarding school Al Zaytun, which was sympathetic to the NII, had told 2,500 of its students to vote for a certain political candidate in the 2004 general elections.

The candidate, he said, had strong ties to Soeharto and his regime. He said one of the facilities at Al Zaytun was named after Soeharto.

“There is a building called Muhammad Soeharto at the boarding school, symbolizing the close relationship between the school and Soeharto's family,” he said.
