ASEAN member country foreign ministers refrained Friday from discussing in detail the matter of Timor Leste’s request to become a member of the organization, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said in Jakarta .He was speaking after the day’s ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting, carried out prior to the scheduled 18th ASEAN summit.
Indonesia is currently the ASEAN chair and has expressed support toward the acceptance of Timor Leste, which was previously part of Indonesia’s sovereignty.
“There has been an agreement to carry [this matter] to the level of the ASEAN heads of nations for further instruction,” Marty said.
He added that the matter was discussed “not in detail but merely in a procedural manner”.
“This matter should be discussed at a deeper level to gain consensus among ASEAN countries,” Marty said.
