East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has responded angrily to an alleged leaked United Nations document that accuses him of seeking more power at the expense of the Parliament and the courts.
The document was published by local media and is reportedly an assessment of East Timor's governance delivered as a slideshow for a UN retreat in January.
At a seminar in Dili in this morning, Xanana Gusmao rejected the UN report saying he remained committed to democracy and had never interfered with the judiciary.
The UN has not confirmed the authenticity of the leaked report but says it will comment on the matter soon.
More to come.

What is new? Obviously it is within their prorrogatives to reject it. The sad thing is that everyone, and almost everyone sees it and it is an open secret in Timor-Leste. However, one wonders why only now that UNMIT wake up to such behave.
We seem to remember that under Alkatiri's government, UN were happy go lucky in leaking news to foreign jornalists for petty mistakes and calling Alkatiri a dictator. Wonders never cease!
Well, I guess the UN consultants who wrote the so called 'report' have to make a case that says East Timor still needs a UN presence beyond 2012.
Where else are these overpaid consultants gonna to go if the UN leaves East Timor?
Afganistan? Not very appealing compared to the relative peaceand quiet in East Timor, is it?
I do agree with you on the consultants but, for Timor-Leste to be seen as a democratic country and therefore for its people are entitled to exercise their rights, the government must not be seen as an obstacle. It is also good for the country that leaders should not burry their head in the sands and be dismissive about the allegations when such a practice is common knlowledge in country. The timorese have more to loose if we are to turn a blind eye on such practice.
