East Timor: August, beachfront in front of government palace to be cleared of vending carts

The decision to move vendors during the month of August from the beach front area in Lecidere angered vendors because they were not told with advance warning nor told of other areas where they can make a living.

Three-wheel cart vendors who usually operate in the beachfront area in front of the Government Palace are disappointed with a decision by the Administration of Dili to remove them out of the area due to international events held at the location and that attract large numbers of internationals to Timor-Leste.

Bernardinho Xavier Freitas, a vendor who operates daily in the area is disappointed with the decision of the government because they were not told ahead of time.

“If we do not sell here for a whole month, what will we eat,” said vendor Freitas last week.

He believes the government should explain to them about where else they can go to sell their goods so they can provide for their families.

“If we do not sell for one day we will incur losses, let alone for a whole month,” he said.
Businessmen Jacinto Gusmao feels the same and he does not understand the sudden warning by the Dili Administration.

“They should have to told us ahead of time so that we could find another location to sell our things, this is too sudden,” said Gusmao.

According to a police officer who chose to remain anonymous, the order to move the vendors from the area came from above and they were only following orders.

“We follow orders from our general command that have been requested by the Administration of Dili that during August not to allow vendors to operate in the area between the government palace and Lecidere until after 5:00 p.m. onwards,” said the police officer.

He also confirmed the reason was because during the month of August many foreigners will be visiting Timor-Leste.

TDW tried to confirm the above with Dili’s District Administration but no representative was available to speak to the media.
